EU-approved capsaicin for animal feed

On 30 September 2025, the EU approval of XP Chemistries' high-purity capsaicin as a feed additive entered into force (Regulation EU 2025/1784).

The approval covers all animal species, requires a minimum purity of 98 percent and permits a maximum concentration of 6.5 mg/kg complete feed.
XP Chemistries capsaicin is thereby legally approved for use in animal feed in all 27 EU member states.

Our capsaicin product for animal feed

XP Chemistries offers an encapsulated capsaicin specially developed for premix companies, feed producers and industrial compounders.

Capsaicin encapsulated in hydrogenated fats

Our product for the animal feed market consists of capsaicin encapsulated in a matrix of hydrogenated fats. The encapsulation protects the active substance during storage and transport, improves bioavailability and ensures that the capsaicin is released in the correct part of the gastrointestinal tract where it has the greatest effect.

The foundation of the product is our high-purity raw material with a minimum of 98% capsaicin. The high purity of the starting material makes it possible to formulate concentrated products with properties that chili-based raw materials cannot match — lower irritation during handling despite significantly higher capsaicin content, better stability and longer shelf life.

Product properties

  • Colorless, odorless and free-flowing — suitable for industrial handling

  • Easy to dose and blend in premix and compound lines without special equipment

  • Low irritation potential during handling — good working environment for staff

  • High and consistent capsaicin concentration per unit

  • Stable during storage and processing — extended shelf life

  • Free from strong odor, stickiness and discoloration

Documented and potential effects

Capsaicin has in scientific studies shown potential to contribute to:

Poultry

  • Improved gut health and more stable digestion

  • Reduced incidence of salmonella with preventive use

  • Better feed utilization and improved growth performance

  • Reduced heat stress

Why high purity of the raw material matters

Traditional capsaicin raw materials based on capsicum oleoresin typically contain 6–10% capsaicin. The low content makes it difficult to develop concentrated, low-irritation formulations — and means that encapsulated products based on chili are often expensive to produce per capsaicin unit.

Starting with 98%+ pure capsaicin opens up entirely different possibilities: we can design formulations with high capsaicin concentration while still achieving good handleability and low irritation. The result is a product that is easier to integrate into existing premix and compound lines and that creates better conditions for competitive total economics.

Cattle

  • Increased milk production

  • Reduced methane emissions

All animal species

  • Reduced need for antibiotics

  • Improved animal health and production performance

EU approval and regulatory grounding

Regulation (EU) 2025/1784 — in force 30 September 2025

  • Applies to: All animal species

  • Use: Via premix

  • Purity: Minimum 98%

  • Max level: 6.5 mg/kg complete feed (5.3 mg/kg for cats and certain species)

  • Validity: Until 30 September 2035, renewable

XP Chemistries capsaicin is the first product of its kind to have undergone a full scientific review under the EU's current regulatory framework. The approval provides a clear quality endorsement and creates a barrier to entry for new market participants.

Ongoing regulatory processes

We are evaluating regulatory processes for strategically important markets outside the EU, including the USA, Latin America and Asia.
